The second phase of the new London Museum at West Smithfield involved the adaptation of the 1960s Smithfield Poultry Market, retaining its record-breaking clear-span concrete shell roof (originally engineered by Ove Arup & Partners) as part of the wider museum transformation. The refurbished building was intended to provide major museum, learning and collection spaces alongside the General Market.
Wentworth provided structural and construction engineering for Keltbray’s alterations to the Poultry Market. Our understanding of the retained concrete structure informed an approach to removal and rebuilding that made room for the new museum while maintaining stability through the changing works.
