The geotechnical team designs retaining walls, embedded walls, piled foundations and deep basements, and assesses ground movement and settlement for construction next to sensitive assets: party walls, rail tunnels, listed structures.

Ground movement predictions, settlement analyses and basement impact assessments set out the effect of construction on neighbouring assets, with instrumentation and monitoring strategies defining what to measure, where, and against which trigger levels.

And when the scheme calls for it, ground and structure are engineered as one, with Wentworth's geotechnical, structural and temporary works teams working side by side across the design, the construction sequence and the monitoring regime.

Scope &
specialisms.

Retaining Wall & Embedded Wall Design

Embedded and gravity retaining walls, from sheet piled and secant walls to reinforced concrete.

Piling & Foundation Design

Piled and shallow foundation design for new structures and heavy construction plant on constrained sites.

Ground Movement & Settlement Assessment

Prediction of ground movement from excavation, tunnelling and dewatering, and its effect on neighbouring assets.

Basement Impact Assessments

Assessments for planning and party wall processes, setting out the effect of basement construction on neighbouring structures.

Instrumentation & Monitoring Strategy

Monitoring regimes, instrumentation and trigger levels, designed with the movement predictions they verify.

Numerical Modelling

Modelling ground behaviour and soil–structure interaction through construction stages, informing design decisions and the assessment of movements and load transfer.
